Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Does the Chef Series use a nonstick-coated cooking pot?
Yes. The exact Chef page and R15 manual describe an aluminum cooking pot with a nonstick ceramic coating; that is a material choice, not an independent durability test.
Explore this need in the finder →Is a named Steam program present on the Chef Series?
No. The R15 manual and exact page list five programs but no separate Steam mode. A supplied stainless rack does not establish a Steam program.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the Chef RIO Mini delay the start of its Slow Cook cycle?
Yes. The exact U.S. manual documents Delay Start for Slow Cook, then the timed cycle automatically enters Keep Warm by default. It is a delayed start, not a ready-at schedule.
Explore this need in the finder →Does a 4-quart Chef pot satisfy a five-quart minimum?
No. Its listed single insert is 4 quarts; Favorite buttons and pressure cooking do not add slow-cook capacity.
Explore this need in the finder →The Instant Pot RIO Mini Chef Series is a compact 4-quart pressure multicooker whose Slow Cook mode is a separate, unpressurized program. Its strongest distinctions from the regular RIO Mini are not capacity or cook-time range: both are 4-quart Minis with adjustable High/Low Slow Cook. The Chef Series changes the pot to ceramic-coated aluminum and adds two programmable Favorite buttons, while leaving Steam and Yogurt off its five-program list. That combination suits someone who prefers the coated insert and wants to recall a saved setting, but it is not the Mini to choose if a built-in Steam program is essential.

The two-vessel options are not part of this Mini
Instant Pot lists Black 140-8000-01 and Daydream 140-8002-01 as 4-quart Chef Series variants. The page describes the capacity as suitable for up to four servings; recipe yield depends on the food and portion, so do not treat that as a guaranteed meal count. This is one inner pot in one heating base, not a dual-bowl product. The core programs are Pressure Cook, Slow Cook, Sauté, Rice and Keep Warm. The regular RIO Mini adds Steam and Yogurt and uses a stainless-steel pot; these are meaningful functional and material differences despite the shared 4QT Mini name.
The Chef Series cooking pot is aluminum with a nonstick ceramic coating. If an easy-release surface is a priority, this is the more relevant RIO Mini variant. Instant Pot describes cleanup as easy, but neither the page nor the manual establishes independent coating durability, a lifespan, or that the insert can be used directly on a burner or in an oven. Sauté happens in the powered cooker base; that does not establish stovetop compatibility for the loose pot.
Timed Slow Cook with a delayed start
The current U.S. R15 manual lists a six-hour default Slow Cook time, a 30-minute-to-24-hour range, and High or Low settings. It expressly says that Slow Cook does not use pressure. That separation is helpful for cooks moving between pressure recipes and a long simmer: choose the Slow Cook Smart Program and its own heat/time settings rather than assuming the pressure option is active. The manual’s temperature-ramp guidance is maker information, not an independently measured test of this unit; use recipe-specific times and the instruction book.
The manual documents Delay Start with Slow Cook and lists a six-hour default from ten minutes through 24 hours. It postpones the start of the program; it is not a ready-at clock that schedules the finish time backwards. The manual also says Keep Warm is on by default for Slow Cook and can follow the timed cycle, with a ten-hour maximum timer at 171°F. That describes the appliance’s control behavior, not a recommendation to hold food for the full period. When your meal timing cannot safely accommodate a delayed start or long unattended cycle, choose a routine that does not depend on one.
A separate Sauté program can brown or reduce ingredients in the cooker, and then you cancel it and select Slow Cook. That is a staged routine in the same appliance, not sauté and slow cooking at once. Pressure Cook, Rice and Sauté likewise remain distinct programs; the product’s multicooker label does not combine them into one run.
Favorites are saved settings, not a meal scheduler
The Chef Series adds two numbered Favorites keys. The manual explains that you first set up a Smart Program, then press and hold one of the Favorite buttons for more than three seconds to save that custom program; pressing it later recalls its settings. This can cut repeated button presses for a household that uses the same configuration, but it does not turn Slow Cook into a different heating mode or make a desired completion-time schedule. The separate Delay Start function still counts down to a start.
The included stainless-steel rack is another detail worth reading precisely. The package list includes it, but the five named cooking programs do not include Steam. An included rack is not evidence of a model-specific Steam Smart Program, and it should not qualify this cooker when the need is “press a Steam button and run a documented Steam cycle.” If steaming as a named cooker program matters, the standard RIO Mini or another exact model with a documented Steam mode is a better comparison.
Care, limits and alternatives
The manual permits dishwasher cleaning for the cooking pot and identifies top-rack cleaning for the steam rack and removable lid components. The pressure-cooking lid has parts such as a sealing ring and steam-release assembly that require the manual’s cleaning and maintenance routine; a Slow Cook-only household should not ignore those parts. Pressure capability also means the lid must be used as instructed for the specific program. The Chef page lists 800 watts, 120 volts, 60 hertz and a one-year limited warranty, but that does not tell us the appliance’s empty weight or open-lid clearance; those fit limits remain unconfirmed here.
Choose Black or Daydream when a compact coated 4-quart pot, flexible timed Slow Cook, delayed start and saved Favorite settings fit the way you cook. Choose the standard RIO Mini instead when stainless steel, Steam or Yogurt matters more than Favorites. Skip both if your routine needs a larger slow-cook bowl, a simple manual dial, a confirmed ready-at schedule, or a conventional slow cooker without pressure-cooker lid maintenance. Each Chef finish has its own exact manufacturer listing and image; the shared review records the finish difference without inventing a third model or claiming one color cooks differently.
