Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Are four custom Favorite keys an essential control feature?
Yes. The exact six-quart Chef Series panel and R45 instructions identify four Favorites that store selected program settings.
Explore this need in the finder →Is an aluminum insert with nonstick ceramic coating essential?
Yes. The exact Chef page lists a ceramic-coated aluminum pot; the standard RIO instead lists stainless steel. This does not establish coating lifetime.
Explore this need in the finder →Do you want Slow Cook with a delayed start rather than a ready-at schedule?
The Chef manual offers a 10-minute-to-24-hour Delay Start and says the factory setting is eight hours. It starts the cycle after the countdown, not backward from a chosen finish time.
Explore this need in the finder →The Instant Pot RIO Chef Series 6QT is for someone who wants a pressure multicooker and a separately selectable Slow Cook cycle, plus a coated aluminum insert and saved Favorite settings. Its main distinction from the regular 6QT RIO is the setup around the pot and controls: the Chef has a ceramic-coated aluminum bowl and four custom Favorite keys; the regular RIO uses stainless steel and lists Yogurt where the Chef lists Egg. The Chef is not a different slow-cooking capacity, and the finish variations do not change its core routine.

A coated insert and four stored settings
Instant Pot lists a six-quart bowl, 1,000 watts at 120 volts/60 hertz and a one-year limited warranty. “Up to six servings” is the manufacturer’s description, not a guarantee for every recipe. The Chef Series pot is aluminum with a nonstick ceramic coating, and the lid and pot are listed as dishwasher-safe. If a coated cooking surface is an essential shopping requirement, this is the more relevant RIO 6QT family to compare. The reviewed product page and manual do not confirm that the loose insert can be put on an outside burner or in an oven; Sauté takes place in the powered base and does not imply either use.
The four Favorite keys can store custom program settings for one-touch recall. The manual describes choosing a Smart Program, setting it up, and holding a Favorite key to save it. That is useful for repeating a familiar Slow Cook configuration or another Smart Program, but it does not change the heating mode or create an automatic dinner-finish schedule. Do not confuse four saved Favorite settings with the regular RIO’s 13 one-touch program choices; those are different concepts.
Slow Cook has a separate set of controls
The Chef’s instructions describe Slow Cook as unpressurized. Choose Low, Medium or High—the manual lists High as the default—then set between 30 minutes and 24 hours, starting from the six-hour default. The steam-release switch is set to Vent for this cycle. The pressure lid remains part of the operating routine, and the manual also mentions an alternative vented glass lid. If you expect a conventional crock with a loose glass lid and a simple dial, the Chef works differently and asks you to follow its specific lid, vent and program instructions.
A separate Sauté program can brown food in the same insert before you cancel and move to Slow Cook. It is convenient for recipes where browning happens first, but it is not a simultaneous two-mode cook or proof that the removable bowl is safe on a stovetop. The product page lists Pressure Cook, Slow Cook, Sauté, Steam, Rice, Egg and Keep Warm as its seven functions. This is broader than the smaller four-quart Chef Series: do not transfer the Mini’s button lineup or missing Steam program to this six-quart model. On the other hand, the Chef 6QT page and manual list Egg rather than Yogurt as a named program; choose the regular RIO when Yogurt is the deciding requirement.
Delay Start postpones the cycle; it does not schedule its finish
The model-family manual gives Delay Start in ten-minute steps, from ten minutes to 24 hours, with eight hours as its default. It starts the selected Smart Program after the countdown; it does not take a requested ready time and schedule the heat cycle backward. That difference can decide between this Chef and a cooker with a documented ready-at function. The manual says Keep Warm is on by default for Slow Cook and counts warming time after the cooking cycle. The maximum on-screen timer is ten hours, which is a control behavior rather than advice about safe holding time.
For a routine, select Slow Cook, set temperature and duration, confirm the vent position, and decide whether automatic Warm suits the plan. Pressure cooking is a separate mode, not a faster Slow Cook setting; marketing comparisons are not measured here.
What the Chef gains—and what it gives up
The ceramic-coated aluminum insert, four Favorite keys, Steam and Egg programs make this Chef meaningfully different from the standard RIO, even though both list six-quart capacity and timed slow cooking. The standard RIO instead lists a stainless-steel anti-spin pot and a Yogurt program. If you require both stainless steel and four Favorites, these are not interchangeable answers: compare another exact configuration rather than assuming one model can combine the other’s attributes.
The pressure lid’s sealing ring and steam-release parts add care steps beyond a simple glass-lid cooker. If you mainly slow-cook, a dedicated model may be simpler. Exact weight and open-lid clearance are not established in the reviewed evidence, so no fit claim is made.
Which finish and when to choose something else
The reviewed Chef family comprises Black 112-2000-01, Sea Salt 112-1312-01 and Daydream 112-2412-01. The manufacturer links the same Chef Series 6QT manual from these pages; their distinct finishes do not establish different cooking functions. Choose this family when a six-quart pot, ceramic-coated aluminum, four saved settings and separate Slow Cook, Steam and Egg programs suit your routine. Choose the regular RIO if Yogurt or a stainless pot is the priority. Choose a purpose-built slow cooker if you prefer a simpler control scheme, or a model with a genuine ready-at schedule if meal timing is essential.
No purchase, cooking trial or coating-lifespan claim is made. Compare the exact Black, Sea Salt or Daydream page with the current manual before purchase.
