Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can I set a Low or High slow-cooking time instead of choosing only fixed presets?
Yes. The manual lists a digital Main Pot Slow Cook program, a six-hour default and an adjustable 30-minute to 24-hour duration. It also gives separate High and Low guidance.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I run a slow-cooked main and a separate rice or steam side at the same time?
Yes, in the dedicated two-pot Serve Together plan: use Slow Cook in the 4-quart Main Pot and an allowed Rice or Steam program in the 2-quart Side Pot. It synchronizes the end; Keep Warm is unavailable during this combined plan.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I brown the main ingredients inside the appliance before slow cooking?
Yes. The exact manual documents Sauté in the Main Pot followed by a separately selected Slow Cook program; it does not say the loose pot is stovetop-safe.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the main slow-cook pot have a nonstick coating?
No. The 4-quart Main Pot used for Slow Cook is stainless steel; the nonstick ceramic coating belongs to the separate 2-quart Side Pot.
Explore this need in the finder →The Instant Pot Dual Action Multi-Cooker is an unusual fit for someone who wants a slow-cooked main and a separate side dish to finish together without reserving a second appliance. Its larger 4-quart Main Pot has a timed Low/High Slow Cook program; the smaller 2-quart Side Pot handles separate rice, grain, steam and warm programs. The “dual” benefit is two independently set pots on one base, not a single six-quart slow-cooking vessel.

Two pots, with useful limits on each
The Multi-Cooker is sold in Sea Salt (140-0101-01) and Black (140-0102-01). Instant Pot lists a four-quart main pot and a two-quart side pot. The main pot is the one that slow cooks; the side pot is not a second slow-cook bowl. It is designed for White, Brown and Sushi Rice, plus Steam and Warm, while the Main Pot offers Pressure Cook, Slow Cook, Steam, Sauté and Warm. If a recipe needs more than four quarts of slow-cook space, the side pot does not make this equivalent to a six-quart single-insert cooker. A larger conventional slow cooker or a larger one-pot multicooker is the more relevant comparison.
When Serve Together helps—and when it changes the plan
The manual’s Serve Together feature compares the cooking times selected for the two pots and delays the earlier-starting program so both are ready together. That can pair a Main Pot stew on Slow Cook with rice or a separate steam cycle in the side pot. You select both programs and their settings first, then Serve Together and Start; the cooker determines when to begin each. It is not a “dinner ready at 6 p.m.” clock: choosing a desired completion time is not documented.
There is an important tradeoff: Keep Warm is unavailable when Serve Together is active. Used on its own, a timed Slow Cook cycle has Keep Warm on by default, and the manual describes a maximum ten-hour Warm timer at 171°F. That maximum is a control limit, not advice to hold food for ten hours. If automatic Warm after cooking is essential, choose the single-pot Slow Cook plan and do not count on it while coordinating both dishes. Delay Start is a separate control, adjustable from ten minutes to 24 hours, and applies to both pots together if Serve Together is selected.
A programmable slow-cook routine rather than a preset dial
The Slow Cook Smart Program defaults to six hours and accepts 30 minutes through 24 hours, with High or Low temperature settings. Instant Pot’s manual describes High as reaching the program’s maximum 205°F in about 2.5 hours and Low in about 4.5 hours; it recommends at least three hours on High or four hours on Low for the respective approach. Those are the manufacturer’s operating explanations, not independent temperature measurements. The timer is flexible rather than limited to one-touch durations, and the manual documents a Slow Cook Delay Start. The last-used time and temperature become the next default, so check the display if another person last used the cooker.
The main pot can also sauté before a separate Slow Cook cycle, which is useful when a recipe calls for browning first. That is an in-base step: the instructions do not establish that the removable pot can go on a stovetop or in an oven. Pressure cooking is a separate Main Pot option, but this assessment does not treat the pressure program as a substitute for the unpressurized Slow Cook mode.
Care and surface-material questions
The main cooking pot is stainless steel. The smaller side pot is aluminum with a nonstick ceramic coating. That distinction matters if your nonstick requirement applies specifically to the slow-cooking pot: the larger vessel is not described as a coated insert. Both cooking pots are dishwasher-safe, but the manual directs you to hand-wash the lids and several removable lid parts. Because the Main Pot lid contains pressure-cooker components, the sealing ring and steam-release pieces still need the manual’s routine inspection and cleaning even when you only use Slow Cook.
The package list includes a steam rack, rice paddle and measuring cup. The manual specifies a rice-cup measure rather than an ordinary kitchen cup and lists different rice-to-water ratios for White, Brown and Sushi Rice. Those are side-pot tasks; they do not increase the main Slow Cook capacity. The compact two-zone layout can reduce stovetop juggling, but it also means two lids, pots and program paths to clean and learn. If you would rarely cook a side dish at the same time, a simpler single-pot model may be a better use of counter space.
Choose either finish when a four-quart timed slow-cook pot plus a separately controlled two-quart side pot fits the meal you actually make. Skip it if you need a single larger slow-cook vessel, Warm during a synchronized two-pot run, a ready-at schedule, or a removable pot explicitly cleared for stovetop use. Compare the Sea Salt 140-0101-01 and Black 140-0102-01 pages for exact finish identity and consult the U.S. Dual Action manual before setting up a particular program. The R7 file names model codes ending -02/-02B and its specifications page identifies DMC421-AMZST/DMC421-AMZBK, while the current retail pages list -01 SKUs. Instant Pot’s manual directory links that same guide from both exact finish pages; keep the printed identifiers distinct if checking an appliance label or part.
